Coronavirus (COVID-19) Statement

COVID-19, the novel coronavirus outbreak currently elevated to global pandemic status, is of particular concern for the elderly, immunocompromised, and those with underlying health issues. The National CMV Foundation's Scientific Advisory Committee is actively monitoring the situation in regards to its impact on children and pregnant women, as data continues to evolve.

As stated by the CDC, there is limited pregnancy-specific data about COVID-19 at this time. However, based on prior outbreaks caused by similar viruses (e.g. SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV), and of course common herpesvirus infections like cytomegalovirus (CMV), we know that pregnant women and babies may be more at risk of becoming sick.

The best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to this virus. The CDC recommends that appropriate hand hygiene and other preventative measures be followed at all times.

If you or a family member presents with cold or flu-like symptoms, you are encouraged to reach out to your local healthcare provider ASAP.

The safety of our National CMV Community is our utmost concern, and we acknowledge that this is a difficult time with so much uncertainty, but for the safety of all, taking the above precautions and avoiding potential contact is currently the best strategy.

There is a lot of information online regarding COVID-19, much of it good, some of it questionable. We recommend sticking with credible sources, like these:

Please Note: The National CMV Foundation is aware of concerns in the community regarding possible interruptions in the availability of medications. The CDC recommends contacting your healthcare provider to ask about obtaining extra necessary medications and supplies in case of an outbreak of COVID-19 in your local community, which may require you to stay home for a prolonged period. As a precaution, you may want to consider a mail-order vendor if you cannot obtain extra medication.

Be aware. Stay measured. Spread the word, not the virus.
