Advocating for Newborn CMV Screening through Hospital-Based Initiatives

However, CMV screening legislation is not a realistic avenue in all states. In this blog post, we hear from Maggie Kettler, AuD, who has helped to lead successful efforts to increase CMV newborn screening in her home state of Ohio. In this post she discusses successes, challenges, and advice she has for advocates in other states.

National CMV Foundation Nominates Congenital CMV for RUSP Newborn Screening

​National CMV Foundation and the CMV RUSP Nomination Team are excited to announce we have completed the submission of cytomegalovirus to the Recommended Uniform Screening Panel (RUSP). Administered by the Secretary’s Advisory Committee on Heritable Disorders in Newborns and Children (SACHDNC), part of the Department of Health and Human Services, the RUSP is a list of 35 core conditions and 26 secondary conditions that all newborns in the US are recommended to be screened for.

CMV infection in mothers is preventable. Yet, most women have never heard of the virus. Estimates of the percentage of women that have heard of CMV range from 9-20%, globally.
